Tell me about it, nearly all my verts have had to be glued back together, as when your trimming a 2 foot long block, sods law means it'll magically crack just where the vert is. I always thought the fossil was meant to be harder than the surrounding rock, hmm

You done better than me,i found a couple of beaten up Plagistoma and one 1p sized vert which snapped when i tried to trim down the 5kg lump it was in.well done.

Hi All
Just got back from Lavernock, 5 hours to find 2 fishing weights and 5 naked blokes sunbathing (sorry girls no pictures), highlight of the day was a flyover by a Lancaster and a spitfire just over the cliffs.

Great finds,the plesi looks like it came in from the sea,you done better than us,we found six fishing weights and a damaged Plagistoma.

Also finished this off, think its a Ichthyosaur Basioccipital Bone  although it's a bit hard to tell, as i managed to slice off 3 bits of the bone with the tile cutter whilst trimming the block down.. oops

Plottie there is no exact location for the verts. They can be found in all different types of rocks along the coast line between Penarth and Lavernock.
 
My routine is to park at Penarth and then walk along the beach next to the sea wall heading towards lavernock.  When I get to the broken sewer, I turn around and walk back towards the car but this time walking over the pebbles which are closer to the sea.
 
The fossils can be found in most type of rock, so basically any rock could have bone in it. You just need a keen eye. Verts can also be loose in the sand/shingle.
 
 
 
 
Fossils can be found in the shale at Lavernock point and along the coast towards st marys well bay. However the shale is covered in a liquid mud at present.

Steve, the Jaw was found amongst the shingle, about 50 yards from the broken sewer thing heading towards Penarth

Nice find, I had better luck, found 3 Ichthyosaur verts, 1 Ichthyosaur lower jaw and possibly part of another bigger jaw. Actually had to empty my rucksack and leave some bits behind as the two jaw blocks were too heavy for my feeble body. Picked up a couple of small Plagistoma from a new fall and a jumble of ichy bones further up the beach but a bit of a disapointment after high tides and stormy weather banked the rocks against the cliff rather than spread them out,managed to dodge the worst of the weather-only getting damp twice!

Prep01 - Diameter is exactly 8cm 
 
Steve - I was hoping mine would pop out like that but the neural arch shattered into 6 bits, so had to reglue it back onto the other side of the matrix to give it support. Both finds were from under the sea wall at penarth.

Well done Bow cracking finds,havn't seen a vert that large there before.
I have a plesi vert like that which was in the matrix like yours but just popped out when trying to tidy it up.
Everyone finding verts except me,coming back off the beach we met a bloke who asked if these were fossils and showed us an ammonite outer whorl imprint about half inch to which we said yes but you can get better stuff and he then produced a 1 1/2 inch ichy vert which he had found after taking about twenty steps onto the beach and which we had walked an hour earlier.

Yesterday Steve (Plagistoma) sent me a message to say that he had left behind some bone for me at Lavernock which he had found but didnt want.
 
I hurried on down there today to pick it up and wow, it is amazing, it's hard to make out from my crappy pic below but it's lots of broken bones from an Ichthyosaur Rostrum and part of a shoulder bone.
 
 
As it was sunny I thought i would spend an hour down there, glad i did as got two more really great pieces.
 
 
 
First off a Plesiosaur vert with Neural arch
 
 
And then half of a very very large Plesiosaur vert

Yesterday I walked from Penarth up towards Lavernock. I found a vert and then on the way back i spotted two bits of bone in a slab (2 foot * 5 foot * 1foot thick), after 2hrs and 45 mins of relentless hammer action I was left with this

 
 
Spent a couple of hours on the big block today (not yet finished), but heres what i've got so far.
 
Looks like one of the Jaw bones from an Ichthyosaur

Went down lavernock last tuesday for the low tide, found 3 shark spines, different type to the ones posted previously, all 3 broke into many pieces while extracting, so currently undergoing superglue treatment. 

Another guy who was there was lucky to find a large Plesi vert which was a lovely orangey/yellow colour
 
Also found an outer whorl of a large ammonite, roughly 3" thick.
 
And from a new cliff fall i found this block with at least 25 tiny Ichthyosaur ribs in it. Spent ages try to find the bits either side but no luck. Hopefully the rest of the Ichthyosaur will pop out from the cliff over the next couple of weeks

Had a good haul this and last weekend, Found a few sharks teeth (Triassic), couple of Ichthyosaur teeth and a few bits of broken bone.   Also bumped into Plagistoma (Steve) last Saturday, He found a nice big bit of bone which he gave to me, no pics of that yet as still trying to prep it.

Here's whats left of an adult sized Ichthyosaur.  
 
Nearly all the bones of this Ichthyosaur are broken and some show signs of predation. Steves mate Mike, finished off the prep and did a very good job considering how poor quality the bones are. 
 
It's nothing amazing, but it's my first jumble of bones.

Steve, popped down Lavernock today supposedly for an hour, but turned into 3, oops. Had to buy a box of chocolates on the way home to avoid a torrent of abuse off the other halfEmbarrassed
 
Left before low tide, but I went to that spot you told me about, it wasn't fully exposed so just searched around the piles on the edges. I found a couple of broken bits of bone but 3 Plesi teeth.
 
Ended up giving one of the teeth away to a little boy, his dad however told me about a promising site in Newport, supposedly his mate found an Ichthyosaur skull in the shale there whilst fishing!!

Tried Lavernock and St Marys Well Bay Yesterday,very windy with showers, found a couple of mediocre Plagistoma at Lavernock and this row of 4 Ichy verts at ST Marys Well.

Andy the Crinoid is from the lower jurrasic

Your doing well from there Bow,i've only ever found one loose ichy tooth there and that turned to dust when it dried out,nice crinoid.
