Dear Sirs. My daughter and I came to your coast fossil hunting this year.We found many excellent fossils and with the help of various books managed to identify all but one. This was different from the others in that it was in a solid red rock, and the impression seems to have come from the inside of the shell.the radiating lines resembled those of a nautillus. Also in the entrance to this shell there is a distinctive red crystal structure with visible tentacles, which I assume was the creatures body.Could you give me more info on what sort of rock this could be and would it be possible to identify the fossil. We found it under golden cap.

Hi Cali,
It is extremely unlikely that you have found the soft parts of the ammonite - to the best of my knowledge, ammonite body parts have never been found by anyone!  If you post a picture of your find on the 'your finds' secion of this site, somebody will almost certainly be able to help you to identify your find.
Cheers,
Mr P.

Hi Guys.
I,ve just come back from a very enjoyable couple of days at Lyme regis.
After a 4hour treck leaving at stupid o clock (4am) wednesday morning, we arrived at Lyme regis, we stayed at the Cobb pub (would reccomend) and during the morning visited the local fossil shops, including the fossil work shop to see good friends Paddy and Chris, excellent very helpfull gents. We got onto the beach at Church cliffs/ Black ven at 1pm, but the beach was littered in glass and silt from the HUGE fall at church cliffs which happened last year in may. Black ven slips were a little more productive but still quite silted over. I found a piece of shark fin spine about 30mm long a nice but small paddle digit, and a very small fragment of lobster tail from the cretaceous greensand/gault clay, which had found its way onto the beach. Unfortunatly we found not a single pyrite ammonite this time which was unusual. I did find a anice lump of lias which i split and revealed 2 nice proms and a Cymbites. Paddy prepped this for me which he done an excellent job of, i,ll post pics tommorow of our finds. The thurs day we went to the Charmouth end along Stonebarrow cliffs, we found many pyrite ammonites and a nice phragmacone, along with a couple of tiny gastropods, but that was about it for charmouth not too good at all, still it was a nice walk soaking up the sun, a beautifull day. So that was it for Lyme and Charmouth quite silted over and very over collected, having gone just after the summer hols, but a very enjoyable trip to one of my fav places, worth a visit.
Cheers Pete g

Visited Lyme today but struggled to find much, some garden junk,a couple of small prommies and my mate got a 5 inch microderocerous which may survive the prepping. Bought a prommie multiblock off Paddy and Chris as a consolation prize.

Julian, I a!gree with you, but have you tried splitting the light grey nodules? last time I was down there (this time last year), I had a bit of success. They were only small (<20 mm) annonites but the variation in calcite colour was rather nice

No I haven't tried splitting any nodules - to be honest I'm a bit lazy!
