Your field reports for Seatown - www.seatown.ukfossils.co.uk

A hands and knees job this time, which produced a small number of pyrites ammonites, but larger pieces of ammonite were found on the beach, but most prolifically in the mud flows, the largest, although only 2/3rds complete measures 10x14cm and was discovered in the mud under a large boulder. Belemnites were very common. Mary B, April 2009

ive have had a keen interest in fossils since childhood, i have just returned from my holiday in devon with my family. I have been to this area many times and have visited the usual fossil haunts in Dorset - lyme regis and charmouth, but its through your site i was introduced to Seatown. This place is just worth a visit for the pub grub and the beach, but a trip along the cliffs following your guide allowed us to collect some good ammonites and belonites alongst with a little fools gold. It was one of the most memorable days of our holiday, thanks to the information you have provided on your website.
Agsain a big thank you from me and my family.

Managed to get a few hours in at Seatown back in April.

Came away with a nice piece of Pentacrinites crinoid bed.

I was very happy to find it, it was in amongst the smashed remains of some flatty ammonites (i dont think the person who pulled it out knew what it was) at the very western end of the beach, the crinoids plates are in the same bed as the belemites.

Thanks for the info, but i'm right in thinking that i can't go and remove them if they are in situ they have to be naturally eroded then i pick them up, Correct?

You can usually see the belemite bed very clearly in situ, if you are lucky you may see some crinoid bed in amongst and If you are really lucky, you will find some other remains, in a very tiny loose piece  of the  belemite bed I found a plesi tooth.

So its always well worth looking really hard!

Very Very Nice, From what i understand these are very rare in the charmouth area! Maybe you should enter it in the fossil of the month.

Kind Regards,
