It will react with the air and gradually dissolve so it wont shine forever

Eddy,(I think I spelled it rong on your other post), sorry,
Pyrite and it's other forms can be found in several deposits, from the Eocene of Sheppey to the Jurassic of Dorset! However some types are more stable and some replace the fossils as well as internal casts
The sulphur needed to form it coming from the rotting of the animal after death!
I believe that the more crystalline it is the longer it stays intact (I believe due to the 'weak' bonds in the regular crystal structure.

Give it a coat with diluted PVA, that will slow down the reaction.

thanks julian ive got plenty of pva so i will give some i coating

prep01
some of the larger lumps seem to have formed around fossil wood although i did find one small section of ammonite fossil with iron pyrite crystals one the outside which may make a nice pendent

no pics yet as ive only just finished washing of the clay

Now then Eddy
Have a look at the pyrite peice that I picked up on the Yorkshire coast many years ago and it is still in one peice.
But this is an exception because I have many peices in the garden that 'did not make it'
I have a few more peices I could show you if you are interested.

hi tabfish

bet that was nice when first found
glad to know that mine may have a few years life in them
were yours found a speeton in the clay or at another site
i have been to rhb, boggle hole, saltwick bay , whitby, and port mulgrove
but have not seen pyrite that still shines at these sites yet

at speeton i found them in a clay slide where fresh water is flowing out to sea.
further down the beach they had all turned dull
do you need to find them before the air & saltwater gets to them.

the small bits i have found at brook bay/chine isle of wight
all seem to have formed around/in  fossil wood
which has now dried out cracked and broke into small bits
perhaps i should have soaked these in dilute pva before letting them dry out
this site also had fresh water flowing out to sea and clay
but the peices were found in the sandy beach
clean & not coated in clay like at speeton ,

yes i would like to see the other pieces to get an idea whats waiting to be found out there.

many thanks eddy

Hi Eddy

Looks as though you found that fools gold at the start of the tank traps at the end of Middle Cliff (i.e. the same place you found your large piece of uncoiled ammonite). All you need to do is wash the mud off and keep it in a dry place and it will be fine. None of mine from that part of the cliff has sucumbed to pyrite decay  and I have had them for over ten years. Although the larger crystals are fine unfortunately the fossil wood and micro crystaline aggegates from Speeton tend to stink of acid and disintegrate very quickly.  The ammonites will go the same way eventually, but not all.

Ps I think you passed me on the beachWink

All the best
Brid

hi brid

not many people about on the beach that day
only saw about 8 all day, so i must have seen you
if you were there  although i did have my head down
looking for fossils
nice to know the pyrite lumps could have 10 years life in them
yes the pyrites was from the gold mine. LOL near the tank traps
the large ammonite was sicking out the clay cliff
about 500 yds further down the beach had to dig it out with a spade
was hoping it was a whole one

you were not the lad with 2 dogs who slid about 20 ft down the ramp while standing up
on the ice at reighton and had disappeared half way along the beach
before i had even got to the bottom of the ramp

ps i had a big red rucksack and a spade in hand

did not see any one else who looked like they were looking for fossils
although some were heading quickly along the beach to the chalk cliffs
have not made it that far along the beach yet

Hi Eddy,

I did see a chap by himself with a spade, although I can't remember if I was with anyone with dogs at the time. I am not sure if it  was on the Saturday though.

Did the dog walker have a Westie and a black and white Collie?

Thank's moonmoth.
We are in London at the moment and I am just getting used to my new lap top and the photo editing software, or I would have uploaded some more pictures of some good peices of pyrite.
