Hi everyone, I’m thinking about going to Abbey Wood, London soon and have some questions. Is the pit open around New Year’s Day? Does anyone have any tips on where to sieve and how deep to dig. Thanks in advance.

Also, is it better to wet sieve or dry sieve?

Hello

I've been a couple of times. The pit itself is quite small and you can find fossil teeth anywhere in it. I presume it's open when the park is open.

Wet sieving it definitely the way forward. You can refill your water bottles at the cafe toilets, if they're open. The teeth are just scattered around everywhere - you can pick them off the surface or lob a trowel full of sediment into your sieve and off you go. We also used archaeology leaf trowels to scrape through the layers. They can be a little tricksy to spot but once you get your eye in you're away. I think my last visit I found over 30 teeth in a couple of hours.

There's a limit of how much material you can take and how deep you can dig but tbh unless you've got a small industrial operation going you're unlikely to hit them on your own.

Also, do you need prior permission to hunt there?

Many thanks, Al
