Hello Eric, I'm no expert, but I would say 'debris' with a bit of 'bark' thrown in!

The texture of the sample you identified as Carboniferous is very similar to fossil bark I discovered on Mt Manzana, New Mexico.  The attached collection is from the ancient Pennsylvanian sea bed on this mountain.
