Hi all, hoping someone can put me out of my misery! Found this at Smoke Jacks quarry today. It’s from the Weald Clay. I didn’t notice it until I started tidying up the rock a bit. I think it could be a beetle elytra? Can someone confirm for me please.

Hi

Nice to see you again today 😊 If you mean the large shape in the centre of your picture I’m afraid not. The elytra are usually dark/blackish but if complete they’ll have a smooth outline and stripes or spots like those in the reference material you’ve also shown. Or is there a different object I should be looking at in the picture?

Hi thanks for replying so quickly 😺 It’s the circled object. It is a dark grey colour and has faint lines down it. See photo.

Found another (better) one splitting down one of the rocks I brought home with me. Think this one could be a partial cockroach wing 😺

Thanks Bill! Chuffed to find this. I hadn’t appreciated these insect remain were so tiny - this is probably the smallest fossil I have in my collection!
