Wycliffe
A friend at work found this pebble in the landscaped gardens of a hospital in Bristol last week and wanted to know if it was a fossil or not.  Could someone help with an id on it please.

Many thanks.

Hi Wycliffe,
Hard to say without having the pebble in hand but I'm torn between a banded flint pebble with a remnant white patina and a pebble of lime mudstone with broken shells and shell impressions.
Cheers
Pete

Can you scratch it with a steel object?

I've just tried scratching it with a steel tip and no, it doesn't scratch.  Does that eliminate the lime mudstone option?  I'm not familiar with flint.

Yes it does, I'd go for banded flint.

Thanks guys for your replies. I'll go and break the news that it's not a fossil!
