Visited Charmouth last week and found this next to a lovely little ichthyosaur
vertebrae (my first so was very excited).

Initially I thought fossilised wood? But its very very light.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. This looks like a modern cut piece of something to me ?Balsa wood or nan made. Certainly not a fossil.

Thanks Prep01,

It’s actually not cut into a cude, it breaks into cube fragments.

Just doing some reading and I think it could possibly be Jet? What are your thoughts

I would agree with prep01, it looks man made. On the front side in the 4th picture it looks like 2 blade marks which are deeper on the left hand side then fade out to scratches. They make it look to me like some sort of plastic. On the 1st, 3rd and 6th picture the tab in the corner on the top also looks man made. The 5th, with the tab now on the side, also seems to show 2 other bits have been removed which were about the same size and shape.

Hello, it could also be a piece of jet, probably not the Whitby quality...
You can test it by rubbing it on a brick; brown streak means jet, black is coal and no mark will be plastic.

greetings, Bert
the search is as valuable as the finds...
