So I’m in Charmouth for the weekend, heading home tomorrow afternoon. I’ve found a bunch of small ammonites, a few larger partial segments…

Where would you recommend I head if i wanted to maximise the likelihood of finding ichthyosaurs bones? I’ve walked the edge of the mid slips around Black Ven, but haven’t found much at all.

All advice most welcome 😁

I’ve heard that Black Ven is the better location for ichthyosaur bones which are unfortunately quite rare. All the locations (Golden Cap, Stonebarrow, Black Ven, Church Cliffs and Monmouth Beach) have bone but it’s just the conditions at Black Ven are ideal for trapping it on the foreshore. They are tangled up in the shingle, between boulders or in rock pools. You could try Church Cliffs nearby but it’s always overrun by tourists. Stonebarrow is good if you want to maximise your chance of finding something it’s very depressing when you come back from Black Ven empty handed. Monmouth beach also isn’t bad for ammonites if you’re prepared to do some wacking of rocks. I hope this helped.

I would walk to the far end to the bigger slippages with the boulders to maximise your chance. Make sure to check the tides as it’s very easy to be cut off under Black Ven.

Hey, thanks for confirming a few of my assumptions. 👍

With the storms, there’s some significant slumps happening night by night towards Stonebarrow, so my plan as it stands is to head that direction again. My B&B doesn’t really have the kind of fasciitis I need to clean up my finds, but I’ll be posting some pick on my return home 😍

Can’t wait to see your finds and good luck hunting! I usually go to Stonebarrow just for the pyrite ammonites but most of the spectacular calcite specimens are in the ‘green’ nodules. They seem to be very elusive as I can’t seem to find any. Haha. I think there are more fossil-bearing nodules at the far end of Stonebarrow so I would, if possible, walk towards Golden Cap and St Gabriel’s Mouth.

Good Luck!
