Hi could anyone tell me if this is jet please? I have tried it on a rock and on the back of a tile and its very dark brown in colour, but I am not experienced enough to tell just by looking at it. It does feel quite light I hope the photo may shed some light on an identification. Many thanks... I found it under a boulder in Whitby. It certainly looks like it. Scratch it across unglazed China  if it leaves a brown streak, it is jet.

THAT is for sure a piece of jet .. feels smooth looks like toffee and as mentioned via nomad easy way to see is the colour of the streak left on a ceramic tile 🙂 i only discovered jet myslef little under a year ago 🙂 i have 2 carrier bags full 🙂 rainy day off to whitby for some trading 🙂

Many thanks for the help, the toffee description was funny as we thought it looked like bonfire toffee when we found it! I also tried it on a piece of wet and dry sandpaper and its a chocolate brown colour. Never found any jet before so I am well chuffed. Thanks
