Found these two rocks on Durham coast today. Maybe some kind of mineral ?

Hi SJR,
The black diamonds look like poorly preserved carbonised lepidodendron bark from the coal measures. Not sure about the other, can't see any structure, maybe coral?

The preservation of the first matches some ironstone nodule preserved Coal Measures plant material from around there - a cone or branch, I can't work out which one though. It's not a coral. I agree with Pete about the Lepidodendron.

Thank you both for the identification. It's glad to know the second piece is a fossil. This is the first time I found this kind of tree fossil in Durham.
