hello all, A bit of an odd request and hope I hope you don't mind me posting onto the forum and hope someone might be able to offer assistance or advice.

I'm a visual artist based in Greater Manchester and am currently working on a commission for to create a set of tactile artworks for use in schools by young people with special educational needs - the project is a development from the concept of a handling collection with an artistic / creative spin.

One of the pieces I'm creating is focused on fossils and prehistoric life and I'm recreating a set of 'common fossils' in unusual materials to achieve different tactile effects. I'm aiming to make the piece as accurate and realistic as possible and hence this post to ask if you might be able to point me in the direction of local collcetors (I'm in east Mossely, east side of Manchester) that it might be possible to borrow fossils from; either as direct reference for me to sculpt from or ideally for me to take a silicon mould from to produce the 'artwork copies'?

At present the specimens I'm struggling to find are: a decent sized trilobite, plants (especially ferns or 'tree scales/bark'), and any fish but am very open to suggestions regarding which items look best and would generate most interest. The artwork is fairly small once completed (320mm x 320mm for table top use) and would consist of five sections each covering a different 'area' of fossil life with each section having three layers of detail so they can be 'excavated' and discovered.

I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing that you could assist with and any advice about where to try is much appreciated.

I would of course be happy to offer copy castings for peoples collections of any items I use in return for assistance if that is of interest.

More details of the project can be found here: http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/leisure_tourism/museums/open_museum/artworks/touchtables.htm

and info on the works I've produced previously are here: http://wp.me/P2hjsw-4D

If you would like further info please do not hesitate to contact me at any time on 07932 050926 and I look forward to speaking to you,

many thanks,

Richard Dawson
