  How annoying!

Having read about the Orgreave Colliery development scheme and the Carboniferous plant fossils discovered by efossil, I decided to take a trip out to look out for similar fossils.

Having walked up and down the paths for a couple of hours, looking at the red-slaty shales and stopping and stooping to pick up, keep or discard fossils, I was surprised when 2 police cars arrived alongside me!

Whilst it's true that the new houses being built would be relative expensive, and presumably it will become an affluent area, the residents are either very alarmist or nervous or frank busy-body curtain twitchers!

The young police officer stopped me to ask what I was doing, rather offish initially, but soon apologetic, as 'there had been complaints of a man acting strangely'. When I asked how? the reply was 'someone walking, looking at the ground, picking up rocks'!!!!

I told the policeman I was collecting plant fossils from the former colliery site. He said that seems fine, but asked for my name, DOB and where I was from. When given, he radio'd in to the desk, who were heard to say 'yes, that corresponds with his car insurance docs! I asked have there been complaints because I've parked my car in the street? He replied yes. He said, 'all's fine. I'll let you get back to fossiling' and let me out of the police car, he'd asked me to sit in!

Having been fossiling for 36 years on and off, I've never known of anything so ridiculous!

I felt really pissed off with the whole series of events, and left earlier that anticipated....

Please be on your guard if you're thinking of looking at pathways/walkways nr. Orgreaves' Waverley housing estate... expect a visit from the police!!

Anybody else had to endure similar?

Cheers,

Aron

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have been dozens of times and never had a problem. Ridiculous!! Was it the long broad path or the narrow paths near the housing? BTW, did you find anything? 😤

The long path shown on google maps, is now blocked with fences and security cameras! The 'new long path' wasn't that fruitful but the narrower paths opposite the houses and near to the new builds were ok. This is where the police stopped me. I'll clean up fossils and post a few pics soon -  some nice Lepidodendron bark, Sigillaria pieces, Stigmaria roots, Calamites, Neuropteris, couple of Alethopteis species, possible blattoid elytra and an ichnofossil or two

Be interested in seeing the ichno and blattoid, as I am unfamiliar with these and may already have some, amongst the 400 or specimens I have from Orgreave.
