Hi, I wondered whether anyone could tell me whether this is a fossil. I spotted it as it looked like fossilised vertebrae (childs wellies for scale!). Sorry if it’s nothing even resembling a fossil!

As Colin requested it would help a lot if you mentioned where this is.

Your vertebrae seem to be made of the same material as the surrounding rock which suggests it maybe some kind of sedimentary structure.
However I can see what looks like a lot of carbonaceous smears and inclusions which indicates that it could be some poorly preserved undefined impression of a coal measure tree/plant.

My first guess is Carboniferous Coal Measures plant too.
