Hi there, I found this interesting object tightly lodged between rocks on a nearby beach, any ideas what it could be? The dove marine laboratory seem to think it's some kind of hoof! Thanks Click image for larger version - Name: 1577462295888895263592842319962.jpg, Views: 64, Size: 112.59 KB

Hello and welcome to the forum. I agree that it's a hoof but it's almost certainly modern.

Ah thanks for that! Someone at the Great North Museum said it could be sea glass but it's just not heavy enough. The bottom is completly flat which also made me doubt it was a hoof. It's quite large, wonder what it belonged to.......

When is a hoof not a hoof - when it's possibly the pedal bone from the hoof. A horses hoof wouldn't be flat on the top or the bottom. On the bottom you have the sole and the frog. Horses stand on what you might think of as an elongated finger. The bit you see on a horse is similar to a finger nail (same material). It's all a bit of an odd design to carry such a large animal.
If it was only the keratin (finger nail) part of the hoof it should be hollow in the middle. That makes me think you might have the inside pedal bone - just a thought.
