Yesterday I walked on a miocene seabed in the wood!

the epoch is LOWER MIOCENE , the layers are composed of thousands of echinoids gen. SCUTELLA
lying on each other. Sometimes you can find others echinoids gen. CLYPEASTER , ECHINOLAMPAS, SCHIZASTER AND PERICOSMUS + bivalves gen. PECTEN.
It is clear that the mass death of so many echinoids is due to a massive volcanic activity that has suddenly changed the environmental conditions of the seabed.

pic 8 )             CLYPEASTER MICHELOTTI ( Michelin 1868 )
pic 9)              ECHINOLAMPAS DISCUS ( Desor 1857 )

Fantastic - we have no Miocene rocks in the UK due to ancient erosion so its great to see a glimpse of what we are missing!

Ryan, I totally agree with you.
I went many times fossil hunting in the UK, mostly in the south and east coast and I must say that
you really have wonderful places to go collecting,
not only for the variety of fossils and geological times, but also for the splendid natural environment. It's a paradise for all the fossils maniacs like me!

Wow, clypeus, seems like an amazing place. The fossils look to be of competition standard as well.

Thomas

If you don't look, you won't find.
