Picked up on a farm field near Effingham, Surrey (not far from Dorking).

It may be wishful thinking but the apparent symmetry with 5 lines on each side caught my eye.

Would welcome your thoughts.

Interesting find! I don’t think it’s a crab but it could be something else.

There are 2 /3 formations (of bedrock) in the Dorking area, all early Cretaceous. I think this may be a piece of Chert (can you scratch it with something steel and make a groove), but what the 'dohnut' shaped object is I'm not sure - it may be a crystal formation..

I should have taken a closer look. The striations go down in to the stone on the side (pic 0277) - not easy to see in the picture but definitely continuous.
On the reverse is a round structure similar in size to the centre of the pattern (pic 0278).
I tried 2 steel objects (tip of screwdriver and tip of nail file) - no indent, just grey lines as if drawn with a pencil (pic 0279) Click image for larger version - Name: IMG_0277.jpg, Views: 46, Size: 154.97 KB Click image for larger version - Name: IMG_0278.jpg, Views: 47, Size: 179.64 KB Click image for larger version - Name: IMG_0279.jpg, Views: 47, Size: 175.55 KB
