B Fossil
Hi all, I dug this up from my garden when i was digging a soakaway. I think it's sandstone.
Does anyone know what it is? On side looks like shell type things and some lines. The other side looks like leaves?
Should i smash it apart or leave it as is?
Thanks

Brittle Star
Hi

From the photos it is hard to tell. The 3rd photo looks like there may be cavities left by shells that have dissolved.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I have to admit I have been putting off answering this post because it might contaim shell fragment and some of the lighter bits might be trace fossils, but I'm really not sure. On balance I would say it possibly contains fragments of fossils. So, this helps me a little to answer your second question, "Should i smash it apart or leave it as is?" On balance, I don't thnk you are going to do any harm in splitting it - just firmly tap it with a hammer around any beddiing planes / cracks where the weak points are and post the results - remember to include a scale in all photos. Good luck!
