This is the frowng tip of a Lepidodendron sp fern, Carboniferous in age I believe.

I posted this find before I finished writing info - silly me.  Yes Colin it is Carboniferous as the beach area is covered in coal mine spoil from Dawdon colliery.  Unfortunately the shale the fossil was in was very fragile and broke up shortly after the image was taken. A pity as I quite liked it.
