Mmm bakelite sounds possible. Thankyou. It appears to have black oily substance in the crevices and a tiny bit of rusty looking stuff oozing out of hole at top.

20156415918_20150529_164038.jpg 201564151023_20150529_164020.jpg    we found this unusual item at the beach. Please can anyone help identify it?. It looks like a fossilised mini camera or radio?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I Think what you have found is a part of a 'block & tackle' assembly - or similar probably off a boat. Certainly not a fossil though!

Hi. Thankyou for your reply. I googled block and tackle images. It appears to be the wrong shape?. It has what looks like a knob on top or an aerial hole?.... pins are holding the wood /leather bits . But what is the stone like covering?. I thought this would take a long time to happen?

Hi

Very interesting!

Is the rock flint?

Are any of the 'structures' softer than the grey rock?

When you say 'pins' - do you mean actual pins or pin-holes?

Hi Richard. Im no expert so i cant confirm flint or otherwise. Just grey stonelike substance. The brown bit looks like worn wood or possibly leather?. And the pins are like little pieces of metal within it....there is what looks like a metal aerial hole on the top? Or a knob shaped bit? We are baffled. ..ooh and whats a neolithic cellphone? Let me google it!... thanks....

Hi again

Could it be water-worn block of resin that with other materials once made up some useful piece of equipment?

The knob like bit on the top seems like metal. With brass looking metal hole. On the front are some little black wirey things. Initially i thought it was a dead creature but one of the black wires looks like its got copper wire in?...

Hello, the reason I was making fun of it is that this is obviously a piece of human technology; probably a piece of a transmittor or otherwise something that functions with electricity.

Something for the archeology department...

I'd go with the eroded old electrical device theory. The grey stuff is probably bakelite, an early plastic used for its insulating properties.

I cannot believe that a non fossil/mineral item has received more attention than anything else in the past week
